Hollywood Wants a Piece of Charlie

Machine Man Variety news article: 'Machine gearing up'You were in Hollywood trade Bible Variety. No, really. True, you weren’t the main focus. The main focus was OH BY THE WAY THEY’RE MAKING A MACHINE MAN MOVIE.

Well, when I say “making,” I mean “it’s in development.” And as we have learned, sometimes painfully, movies in development often do not make it out of development, at least not in our lifetimes. But still! This is a pretty amazing thing for a not-quite-finished experiment in fiction.

“They” in this case is Mandalay Pictures, who do actually get stuff made, and who I think get this concept particularly well. I’m not saying they’re self-mutilators. I have no proof of that. Let’s just say that if you were, I think they’d be sympathetic.

So Marc Graser of Variety reported this, and look what he said!

…suggestions from readers are integrated into the plot as the story unfolds.

I’m not sure I want that in print. That seems like the kind of thing that could lead to lawsuits. But, well, it’s true: you guys post comments, I read them, and that affects what I write the next day. So there you go. We have a film deal.

I have to mention (again) my Machine Man muse/tormentor M.I. Minter, the guy who essentially provoked me into doing this, because his response to this latest development was:

It’s amazing the fantastic things that happen when you regularly produce work.

I’m starting to suspect that M.I. Minter will make one hell of a Daddy one day. He has a knack of delivering delicious, crunchy praise with a chewy, you-can-do-even-better center.

Congratulations.
It would be great to see the movie come out. Hollywood's been so "uninspired" lately. There's a few "new" things that come out every year, but most of what we get is "yet another saw" movie or another remake.
This movie would surely pull a crowd, eager to see something a little bit different, and you know that everything you write is a little bit different (which, coincidentally, would be why you rock).

Congrats.
Couldn't happen to a more deserving guy.

Congrats Max! I have no doubt your story will be told on the big screen, it's just too good not to.

Congratulations!

Though if i may suggest, i think the movie should be a TV serial :P

just kidding, of course. AWESOME THOUGH!

i really can't wait for anything of yours to become a movie, because if its good i'm sure everything else will follow shortly after.

A full-size serial? Nah, just do 60 seconds a day in the middle of a bigger show. Instead of an ad, we can just watch Charlie and them.

2 thoughts...
1. how 'bout we lwt max finish writing the story before we adapt it into a movie? oh right it's hollywood, just throw in some big explosions, and you don't need a real ending!

and 2. MAX! i expect my royalties!

Congratulations. And I think if the movie does get made, we, the readers, should get a cut of the profit because we helped make it. ;)

I'd say that's pretty impressive really. An author few people know about managing to sell the movie rights to a book that isn't even fully written yet.

There's a story in there somewhere, I'll write the unauthorized Max Barry biography, then sell the movie rights to it. I'll make millions!

On a more serious note, that's wonderful news. Hopefully this works out well for you.

Congratulations! Will it be, do you think, the Machine Man story OR the story of a writer writing it? In which case, who would you like to play you Max? A young Robert Mitchum or, given availability issues, someone else?

Congrats Max!! Seriously...it was just a matter of time. I'm glad they didn't do the math and say, "Well, he's only got X# of people paying $6.95...so we can't really fund a movie on that." Mandalay saw the bigger picture...pun intended.

I mentioned this before: David Cronenberg. He's got the right kind of weird visual affection for melding biological parts with machines and telling a cryptic and exciting story on film. I keep calling David, but he won't answer. Maybe now, somebody with cujones will get his people to talk to Max's people.

(And besides...I just wanted to comment here so everyone can see the machined nut by my name. We been here since the day Charlie cut his first leg off....right folks!)

And our cut of the option dough will be..? Ah yes, I thought so. Not that we don't deserve our 0.0% mind you, in fact we really should pay you to write this book, and the studio if they make this movie.

Oh that's right, we already did, and we will. So all's right with the world, what a relief!

I support.
But should the moviemakers wait until Machine Man is done? i think they're pushing Max too far by getting it done too soon.

btw, when will Jennifer Government come out? it's been years since the last movie deal was signed.

*waits*

I think eventually they're just going to meld all your movies together into one.

Jennifer and the NRA shooting at Charlie, who's infiltrating Zephyr Future with the omnipotent Human Resources in the cafeteria, sipping Fukks.

I'm still waiting for Syrup, Jennifer Government, and Company to be made :(

BTW, how has Company NOT been made yet? It's like a perfect Jason Reitman vehicle, and REALLY perfect for the current economic climate.
