Machine Man (serial)
CHAPTER NINETEEN

Earlier, I hadn’t paid much attention to which floor we were on. It was somewhere I hadn’t been before, was all that registered. But as I moved to the shattered window and pushed aside the flapping drapes, I realized: we were really, really high up.

Yea thats cheating.
Short pages are good for end of chapter cliff hangers like when Lola got shoot. But this, this has left me feeling empty and now I have to kick some cute little kittens to feel better about the world, Max Please think of the Kittens!

Actually, this feels like a 'breather to catch up' page after the hectic rushing of the last few...

Or Maybe Max had some new social (publicity) engagements this week and was short on time...

Just a segue - we went down but are now really really high? After kicking whasisname through the window?... oops...

I think this is the perfect place for such a short page, haven't had one this short in ages and it sure does its job!

But, did the Manager (or Dick, as I'm calling him in my head) have the robo-wing augmentation installed yet?

I chose to read today's page as coming from the author and not from the character. Perhaps someone sent Max a message saying, "but what if they were only on the second floor?" and Max wrote this as his reply...

lol Alex.

I agree short pages are a bit of a let down. That said, this project is likely quite difficult and as a result short pages are inevitable.

The trouble with short pages is they lack any depth. With a long page a small story is generated. According to Max himself, pages arent necessarily meant to be read with each other, the project is for a page a day read. The short pages can't really be read alone, they don't fit the puzzle properly. Sure you can force a piece in and make it fit, but that doesn't mean it actually fits. As was mentioned, they finish a section, but otherwise they feel wrong (I would rather a full page finish myself.)

This is the part where Max gets mad at our whining and doesnt have a page 90 at all, lol.

We shouldn't be thinking about the lenght of the pages but rather on how the narrative is unfolding. I think this was a nice one. As long as the story makes sense in the end, and doesn't feel rushed, who cares if some pages were shorter than usual? We shouldn't be judging the Author by the number of words he can spit out, that's Capitalist thinking, but rather by the quality and the work's ability to surprise us, and to generate emotive resonance. And if you think about it in those terms, this page really gets all the points right, at least in my opinion. I was glad that it's confirmed that it's a high up place that the Manager was kicked from. Imagine what a let down in would have been if he had simply fallen into the lawn from the ground level ...
