Machine Man (serial)

“Clavicle,” I said. “Well, let’s talk bones. They’re only strong and lightweight by biological standards. I can think of six carbon polymers that are lighter and stronger off the top of my head.”

“Because I don’t want to break.” Lola probed her clavicle with her fingers. Her skin glowed almost red in the light of the setting sun.

“Exactly. You don’t.”

“It feels vulnerable.” She took my hand and pressed my fingers to her clavicle. “Don’t you think?”

I swallowed. “Yes.”

“And my ribs?” She guided my hand lower, over her sweater, until my fingers rested on the Better Future logo. An inch lower, the word DARING rose and fell across her right breast. “Should they be carbon polymer, too?”

“I…”

“Because I got shot. My ribs were not bulletproof.”

“Exactly. If they… if we had… done something about that…” The air was thickening. I could barely suck it in. “Carbon polymer is… just… an example. There are several… lightweight…”

“They put pins in my ribs. Can you feel them?” She moved my hand lower. I touched DARING.

“Oh, God.”

“I like you, Charlie.”

“I… like…”

Her fingers closed over my other hand. I was wearing a glove, because earlier I had attached some remote-sensing digits for electronic work, and I didn’t want to knock them on things. “Can you feel… with this one?”

“I’m… not sure. They mainly convert electromagnetic signals into language my nerves can understand. For example, the radio spectrum around three gigahertz feels like candy floss.”

“What do I feel like?” She moved my hand up, toward the side of the sweater that said VISION. Her eyes locked onto mine. It was a highly charged moment. Then my hand twitched and I jabbed my fingers into her sternum.

“Ow!”

“I’m sorry!” I pulled back my hand. “I didn’t…”

“It’s okay.” She pressed closer. “Try again.”

“Um,” I said, distracted. Because pulling my hand away from Lola’s chest, that had been harder than it should have.

Highly charged moment - is that now a double entendre?

Man, they had to move her breasts under her ribs? Or did they move the ribs up under her neck? What kind of surgeons do they have!

I speculate that Charlie can feel the electronic field of Lola's heart with his electronic sensing digits.

Actually, I am assuming that they gave her a new electrical/mechanical one - was it ever clear what got put in when the shot up one got taken out?

Couple of magnets under the skin can do the same job as a whole fistful of electronic sensing digits though...

I'm also thinking there's some sort of interference or something that draws Charlie's mechanical-fingered hand to her breast(s). The feeling could be pleasurable, or even addictive. Further research is needed, preferably in the dark.

I suppose the closing phrase "that had been harder than it should have." is a lot better than "Boooobies!"

Of course we might be getting comments about other things being harder than they should have, etc.
C'mon, I'm SexCpotatoes, not PG-13potatoes, somebody had to point that out, or we'd never get to more meaningful discussion on here.

I'm finding it a little hard to keep track of which parts of Charlie have mods, and which don't.

There used to be this fantasy series called Deltora Quest - each book was around 100-pages, easily digestible in an hour or so.
On the spine there was the McGuffin for the series - the belt, the trident, whatever. There were a few different McGuffin's during the series. But on each book in the series, it showed it being formed. A new gem in the belt, a new bit to the trident.

I think that'd be useful here. Instead of having a belt, have a squished leg, or a few neatly-severed fingers.

"Talk dirty to me" I'm totally into, but dirty talk about carbon polymer bones? Not so much. Hey, but as long as these two crazy kids are happy then I'm not going to complain.

@CrystalR: i find it fairly safe to assume that the majority of Charlie has been modded now.
both Legs
i think i recall one arm, and/or a few fingers

So far the body (part) count is two legs and a hand. I always forget which hand, though.

Easy! If he was right handed before the modifications, he'd absolutely want to chop off (fingers on) or his entire left hand. He needs his dominant meat-parts for fine motor control when building new parts, whereas he could just hold something in his left hand and set it to "pause" and it wouldn't move or shift at all while he was working on it.

If he was left handed, he'd chop off his right.

To be logical, we (and he) are dealing in not so thoroughly charted territory, and Charlie wouldn't want to risk bugs in the interface when doing important and delicate operations building his new parts.

So Max, which is it, is Charlie Left or Right-handed?

Machine Man subscriber CrystalR (#4160)

Well, left-handed people have the tendancy to be more creative, whereas right-handed people tend to be more logical and analitical.

It depends whether you're on his side or not. If you think Charlie's doing the right thing, then you'd say he's right-handed, because it's logical to him and to you.

If you think Charlie's doing the wrong thing, he's left-handed, because it's a creative thing to think of, and illogical.

It's like a reader litmus test!
