Machine Man (serial)
CHAPTER SIXTEEN

I emerged from the Glass Room so tired I could barely keep my head up. The Contours bore me smoothly toward my bunk room, not minding that I nodded off once or twice along the way. They were good legs.

Lola was outside my room, leaning against the wall. That woke me up. “Hi,” she said. She fingered the hem of her Better Future polo shirt. Lola had worn nothing but company merchandise since her operation; I was pretty sure she hadn’t been outside.

“Hi,” I said.

“I’m sorry about before.” She took a step toward me, then a more confident one, and took my hand, the one with fingers. “I mean, I’m sorry we argued.”

“That’s okay.” And it was. Now she was here, I couldn’t even remember what we’d argued about.

“I’m a yeller.” She smiled crookedly. “I maybe should have warned you about that. It comes with growing up angry at your mom.” She held out her arms, and we hugged. It was fantastic. It went on forever. She turned her head and kissed my neck, and I almost passed out. “You’ll help Carl, won’t you?”

I stiffened.

Lola slipped out of the hug. “I’m not saying your parts. I get that now. Like my heart, that wasn’t just a thing. It was me. I should have realized you would feel the same way.” She bit her lip. “But I thought, maybe, if you wanted, you could make some new parts. For Carl. Do you think you could do that?”

“Yes,” I said. “I think I can do that.”

She grinned. “Well, that’s so great.”

I shrugged. “Well.”

“You’re the best. I don’t mean that like an expression.” She kicked my Contours. This registered as a non-localized tingling, like I was standing outside in a thunderstorm. The hairs on the back of my neck stood up. “I mean, you are the best, Charlie.” She began backing away. “You need your sleep. Talk tomorrow, okay?”

“Okay.” I went inside and sat on the bunk. I began to feel very guilty. Because what I’d said about helping Carl, that was kind of a cheat. If Cassandra Cautery did what I’d asked, Carl would not be around to be helped.

It's perhaps disturbing that my mind is inserting the 'dramatic sting' at appropriate moments while reading.

Duhn duhn duhhhhhhhhhhhh...

Wow, she really is a Lola-coaster. Geddit?! No? *sigh*

Should the end of that last sentence read "... to be helped." or am I missing something here?

@Ballotonia I think it means that Carl would not be around ... for Charlie to help. Which makes you wonder, does it mean around as in alive? Or around as not a brain-in-the-jar.

I feel bad for Charlie though, it doesn't really seem that Lola is that into him. She's into his art maybe, but not really that interested in him.

@Electrichead

Think of a groupie lusting after a musician, to take the example to perhaps its shallow extreme. They're interested in the 'art' and the 'celebrity', not the person.

Now I'm not suggesting Lola is into Charlie's celebrity (unlike some of the other interns around the joint) but isn't it natural to be attracted to somebody for which you have an affinity, and then be blinded by it / to them?

Heh, Robert, drop the "it/to" and you get "blinded by them" which Charlie could very well end up doing, soon. Whether it's to himself or a volunteer, I can't wait to see what Charlie comes up with (panoramic vision, x-rays and infrared, etc, to replace his meat eyes)

I don't think Charlie would request Carl be killed, I think he wants him fired or laid off or something. The mere sight of Carl seems to bug the hell out of our protagonist, maybe Charlie could eventually get over that, but from the beginning of this novel, you just get the vibe that Charlie is not good with people. He doesn't understand them, or why they do what they do, at all. And much hilarity is bound to ensue because of this character flaw.

IDK if I would want an x-ray generator in my head.

Why do I feel bad for Carl, wasn't he the evil one?

Something about "The hairs the back of neck stood up" just doesn't seem right.

Carl wasn't evil per say, just not always working with Charlie. I actually kinda like him.

I was just about to point that one out, too, Anon.

Isn't this another great thing about real-time writing? You get a free spelling/grammar check by your fans every page that can be easily fixed while it's still on the computer.

Yes, yes it is. An embarrassing, highly public spell/grammar check. But still.

You could look at it this way, we pay you for the opportunity of providing an efficient spell/grammar check system in place of you paying an editor to do it for you... I gotta say, that is some good marketing. lol.

the kissing neck thing... hope he doesn't lose the neck to a cybernetic one, since this is so great for him, i mean how would it even be possible to convey the sensation -electromechanically- of lips on neck?

or, something could eventually go horribly wrong and sitting down starts to provide the same sensation.

Is this some kind of Jock vs. Geek thing between Charlie and Carl?

Yes, except this time the geek could kick the jock through the uprights for a field goal.
