Machine Man (serial)

As the Contours took me through the corridors, I ate my muffin and tried to figure out how to replace my own arm. There was an obvious logistical problem: once I removed my meat arm, that left me with just one, and I wasn’t sure that was enough to attach the metal one. Which made it a frustrating little logic puzzle, like having to transport a fox, chicken, and bag of seed on a boat that could only bear two of them. If I had a mechanical arm, there would be no problem: I could program it for a slice and dice, sedate myself, and wake to a finished job. Well, that’s an exaggeration. I wouldn’t be comfortable trusting it that far. Not to the point of doing surgery on me while I slept. But still. It was like needing a ladder that’s on the roof.

I reached the elevator, swiped my pass, and pressed the button for sub-floor level three. The panel emitted a regretful tone. The screen read: CONTACT MANAGEMENT.

“Hmm,” I said. I pressed the button again, just in case. But no. I did not have access.

Stymied. It wasn’t a total surprise. But it made certain things clear.

I stepped out of the elevator and chewed my lip. After a minute, I decided two things. First, I needed Lola to help me with this arm. Second, it would be smart to go to the Repository, collect all my parts, and never let them out of my sight again.

Take the fox and the seed across, then leave the seed, take the fox back, roast the chicken that was trying to get away when you were on the other side of the river, enjoy some MFC*, cross back with the fox, make a fox-fur coat (he was giving you sass anyway) and throw the seed at the PETA protesters.

Problem Solvered.

The interesting thing with this 'page a day' novel as a delivered by Mr Barry, is that there are cliffhanger days, and there are 'I want more' days and there are 'I totally saw that coming' days, but there are no bad days.

I am really enjoying this as a concept and as a process, plus which I just like the way Max puts words together.

Not to mention MFC is really tasty.

Happy Birthday fredzfrog!

Also, Max, your posts make the week go by fast. Usually I wait for the weekends, but now on the weekends I feel myself waiting for the week so I can get more Machine Man. XP

Agreeing with Kyle; The email comes at around 11:30 for me in the UK, just in time to read it whilst munching on a sandwich over lunchtime.

But apart from the page a day, I get a heck of a lot of enjoyment from reading the page comments, so it's like double the fun of just reading a page a day from a book.

I just know that I am going to have to buy the paperback when it comes out as I guess a reasonable percentage of the Moral Superiority will too. So I guess Max learnt something in marketing as he'll be selling the same product twice over!

max should totally include our comments in the book... with an "add your own" blank space!

just kidding...

but i do agree with Pev, in that we get to talk to other readers in real-time, while Max is writing it in real-time... and that we can actually influence the outcome of the story

He should build a leg, shaped like an arm with hand and fingers. He could use it to attach his arm. Or, people without arms often use their feet to do stuff, like draw pictures. He needs to train his feet to do arm things.

Problem solved. Lola is too unreliable.

Adam; seriously. We used to have handy legs, then the whole wanting-to-cross-large-flat-distances thing stuffed it right up.

Wow, Adam, that's actually kinda brilliant. I may have to use that.
