Machine Man (serial)
CHAPTER ELEVEN

I was by Lola’s side when she woke. She took me by surprise, even though I’d been waiting for it: her eyelids fluttered and two dozen tiny muscles contracted and suddenly her face looked completely different. It was a little disconcerting, to be honest. I hadn’t watched many people sleep before. Any, now I think about it. Maybe a couple of dogs. And they had not prepared me for this: this sudden infusion of consciousness, where a second ago there had been none. Not to insult dogs. But it was different.

“Hey,” I said softly. Lola reached for her nose, because there were a couple tubes in there. I guided her hand away. “You’ve had surgery. They had to fix your heart.”

Her eyes widened. Her fingers moved down to her chest, touched the bulge beneath her gown. “Bah.”

“It’s okay. Just try to relax.”

“Bah.”

I leaned closer. “What?”

“Bah.” Her fingers closed around my shirt. “Bah.”

“Don’t exert yourself,” I said, alarmed. “You’re not supposed to raise your blood pressure.”

She pulled. I went with it, because I feared that if I resisted, she would pop her stitches. Her lips brushed my ear. “Back,” she said. “Put it back.”

Mine is "some assembly required". Still appropriate, no?

Hmm, so she wants her old metal ticker reinstalled... There'll be an extra charge for that, it's not covered under the manufacturer's warranty -- uncertified, non-refurb parts must not be installed for a warranty repair, unless instructed otherwise by the service department manager or acting department manager and form YBDT-1242 is countersigned by the VP of Customer Relations. Sorry.

Why did Carl shoot her directly in the heart with not completely lethal bullets if Charlie's company didn't know about the heart and want to get it out? It must have some special feature that Lola really wants back.

I would have gone with 'baa' or 'buh' instead of 'bah' since back even in Aussie is a ack sound not an ah sound.

There's usually more text in the comments, hehe.

I would think that our protagonist made sure she got an upgrade, but what does this mean to her? Could go either way!

It's like the fandom for a TV show, y'know? After each episode you get together and chat about it. Except that usually for books, you don't get to do it page by page, cos everyone reads at different paces. It's nice to have a fandom where everyone's on the same page.

Badum-bum tsshh.

Anyway, page-related comment: Bah!

Lol, but there would be no worthy comments without your greatness Max, so I wouldn't worry.

(side note) I have to read all the comments too. I found that it adds volumes to the experience.
