Machine Man (serial)

But I digress. I was talking about the crying baby that woke me. I discovered the infant care ward while cruising the hallways in my new hospital-issue wheelchair; I glanced inside a room to see rows of glowing pink- and brown- skinned babies, tiny limbs flailing and clutching at the air inside yellow plastic incubators. Couples filled the chairs, wrapped around each other. I stopped going that way, though, when one man looked at me like: Well, that puts things into perspective.

The baby that woke me sounded frightened. I heard another join it, then a third. Each crying baby seemed louder than the last, until I realized they were just closer.

Cassandra Cautery, the tiny lawyer, appeared in the doorway. She wore a snug gray jacket over a pinstripe shirt with a big collar, and a little skirt. It was a schoolgirl-meets-Wall-Street look. Her eyes glistened, as if she was on the verge of tears. Her lips trembled like she couldn’t keep the sympathy in. “Oh, Charlie,” she said. “Look at you, you poor thing.” I could barely hear her over the wailing of the babies.

Gee, and here I was think Cassie was a *bad* person... Obviously she's a just nice lady doing her best in a nasty profession working for a big impersonal corporation, I'm sure she and our protagonist will get along just famously now. Shudder.

Ha ha ha...

I like the idea that small children (and possibly animals) have an instinctive fear of corporate lawyers.

Having a lawyer by your side is not the same as having a lawyer on your side. And a lawyer on the verge of tears? Even more suspicious.

Also, juxtaposing the babies with the reminder that Cassandra is tiny, made for the strange mental image of a baby in a business suit standing in the doorway (whose bottle has just been snatched away).

I remember when Ms. Cautery is first introduced, she calls herself "a machine". Literal truth? Metaphor for her ruthless competence? Misheard by Charlie?

Could a real machine be evil enough to practice corporate law?

"Couples filled the chairs, wrapped around each other. I stopped going that way, though..."

I've reread this several times and it still sounds awkward. Especially the second part. I can't tell where he is or get a good picture of the ward.

But I also agree with Pev, the crying babies are great. :)

@Pev: reminds me of the horses in Young Frankenstein, whenever someone says Frau Blücher

@Jess I think that line conjures up a graphic image of the parental grief in a neonate ward - I feel I got it completely.

Is Cassandra's surname an association of "cauterize" and Cassandra whose prophesies were never to be believed - are we to credit her with any credibility - well I don't know she could be softening Charley up for some huge disappointment - I think that babies always cry out of fear - part of their habilitation to the new life they are forced to come to terms with
