Machine Man (serial)
Lola ran after me. My Contours took three more jerky steps, then Lola caught me and jumped onto my back. I felt her face bury itself in my neck, hot and wet. “I made you a heart,” I said. “It’s at Better Future.”
“Oh.” Her arms squeezed me. “That’s really sweet, Charlie.”
“The one you have won’t last. And I don’t think they’re going to give you a new one. But if you take us out, kill the van, and the cops and paramedics are already on their way—”
“I get it. Stop talking.”
Something clanged off my chest. I looked up to discover that while Lola and I had been talking, security guards had started running at me with guns. Or, more likely, running at Lola with guns. Cassandra Cautery screamed orders, gesturing. Jason bent over his device. It was probably not long before my gun-arm swept across my shoulders and removed both our heads.
“I’m glad I met you,” I said.
“Me, too,” she said. We kissed.

Cass & Co. meet up with Charlie, Lola and Dead Carl in the rubble. At first, Jason's got some RC joystick that's going to make Charlie get in the van. Then Jason can't control him fast enough. Then through some magical, love-powered electro-magnetic pulse thing, Lola jumps on Charlie's back and Lola & Charlie are on the move.
This is a by-product of the page-a-day thing, but I feel like it's all happening in slo-o-o-w m-o-o-tion........

Let me recap the plot.
Lola has an EMP emitting artificial heart. It was only designed for one pulse before recharge and she's gone two already. She's looking pale because the power supply in the heart is on it's last legs.
Charlie has worked out that Kissing with Lola sets off her heart's EMP pulse.
Charlie has lost nearly all his major organs and it is only the atomic powered body trunk that keeps him alive now.
When Charlie and Lola kiss, her heart will go Boom and they will both die... unless Max has a good plot twist (fingers crossed!). There's a new heart for Lola back at the Lab. Unless Charlie's parts is EMP hardened he's a gonner.

I'm wondering though if our beloved author is thinking of killing off Lola - that'd be dark and confronting, but risks angering the fans who've bought into the idea that love conquers all and a good woman can fix any man no matter how broken he is emotionally and physically. It would also make the scriptwriter's job of turning the story into a mindless shoot 'em up with a happy slappy love story ending that little bit harder (which must be difficult to resist sometimes).

Not that this has anything to do with Charlie, of course. I'm just sayin'.

P.S. I usually imagine the first person narrative as being told to me in a pub by the dude, at least handwritten on scraps of paper, (or perhaps told to a smallish group at a house party, lots of wine and food, half naked women hangin' out by the pool to give me an alternative when the pace slows. You understand.) not typed up or anything that fancy. Unless we start admitting 'tales from heaven or hell' the dude's gotta be alive to tell the tale somehow!
