Machine Man (serial)
CHAPTER THIRTY-SIX
“I love you, Charlie,” Lola said. “But I’m not sure how much you is in there.”
I stared at Carl. This didn’t seem to be a trick. His chest did not rise or fall. He was genuinely non-living.
“I think you took a bad turn,” she said. “Because at first you really were making yourself better. You were taking charge of your body. But then it started to go the other way. I noticed that a while ago. And when at Angelica’s your legs stopped working, I thought… I thought, maybe that’s not such a bad thing. Because you might start to get in charge again.”
Carl was off. He was non-functional. He was disabled. He was dead.
“I’m not against self-improvement,” she said. “I just think you’ve started going backward.”
The sirens were very loud now. Then they stopped. Somewhere below us, I heard engines. Voices. When I turned to Lola, reflected blue light flickered across her face.
“Charlie, you’re the most amazing person I’ve ever met. But not because of your body.”
I felt a bubble of grief rising within me. Because she was very lovely, standing here telling me to shed myself: she was a girl who loved me and they did not come along every day; they had not come along in my lifetime prior to this. “Lola,” I said, and my parts said: Shoot her. Which kind of proved Lola’s point. My grief sharpened and I realized it wasn’t for her. It was for them. “I love you,” I said, and I wasn’t sure who I was talking to, but my parts said: I love you too.
Then my arm died.

What the hell is phantom limb pain like if your whole gosh-darned body is missing. That's got to be some weapons-grade phantom limb pain, right?

2. If Charlie could make some parts that worked like his biological parts did except stronger, eg. still thinking about where to step, that should work out eventually...
3. OMG I just realized the actual signifigance of his arm turning off and that it has nothing to do with Charlie's mental issues
and 4. I really doubt Better Future's going to let Charlie strip down to being a head and an arm on a life-support system - that would be pointless and expensive (from their point of view)
wow, that's a really long post :)

This sentence made me pause for a second. I understand how it can work grammatically, but I still think the second "you" should be italicized to avoid confusion.

The comments have been lovely, but I think the media is overplaying the extent to which the comments are influencing the book. But if they give you a hook, I guess you better take it!

"Ten pages left" -- I haven't written 'em, but I do feel an ending coming on. Of course, on p140 I thought I'd probably finish around p160. But this time I mean it.
The real-time reader comments are the standout of this experience for me. Because in terms of day-to-day writing, it's pretty much the same as always: I sit down and write a little each day. I'm writing for a different medium, and that's interesting, but it's reader interactivity that really makes it different.
There have been plenty of times I've read a comment like, "I'm kind of surprised that ____ hasn't ____," and thought: Oh yeah, good point. And I've adjusted the next page based on that. More broadly, I've gotten a sense of what kind of story this is from how people have reacted to it. Not every comment is gold, of course, and not every gold comment has been used, but it sure has had an effect.

What? only 10 pages? There really feels like there are at least 2 or 3 chapters left... Along with a few pages that says what happens to the characters.
