Machine Man (serial)

They sent me out through the underground parking lot, to avoid being seen by the emergency services people who were apparently crawling around above us. I didn’t understand how the parking lot would make any difference, since it exited in the same general area, but I was no longer worrying about details. I was prepared to assume Better Future would take care of things while I focused on the big-picture goal of running until I found Carl and then shooting him.

The parking lot was lit by a portable generator and a series of halogen lights, which made everything either blindingly bright or lost in impenetrable shadow. Better Future vans and Hummers idled in the dark, their chrome reflecting like supernovas, tailpipes belching fumes. “Hold here a second, please,” said Jason, and people swarmed me, performing final checks. Someone wrapped me in a top, a security guard jacket with one arm cut off.

My legs hiccuped forward. “Only another minute,” said Jason. He thought it was me. It wasn’t. I could feel my legs’ impatience. Soon they were going to start running whether these people were ready or not.

“All clear,” said a lab tech. They began backing away. People climbed into vans; doors slammed.

“Wait.” Cassandra Cautery walked up to me. Her head was bandaged. “One thing, before you go.” Then she simply stood there. I didn’t want to tell her to hurry up, but unless she moved, I was going to run through her. She reached for my face. I was not sure about this, but it was a little late to stop trusting Cassandra Cautery, so I bent down. She stretched on tip-toes, placed her hands on my cheeks, and kissed me. “Be careful.”

The Princes Leia moment.

Are we going to find out that Cassandra, and Charlie are siblings and that Carl is their father?

Then the alliterative christen names would make sense!

if the contour 3's have a nice polish on them, does that make the main character 'charlie sheen'? I really need to stop typing when im so tired.. :p

for some reason I imagine charlie wears glasses. Why the hell doesn't he have a helmet with a HUD and some kind of visual augmentation to help his targeting. Surely he's not supposed to aim his gun arm in the general direction of his target without any prior shooting practice. I foresee a lot of blown up cars and store fronts.

when you have a gun integrated into your nervous system, why not just integrate a gun mounted camera into the nervous system too? Don't have to waste time lining up your arm with you field of vision....

I just realized, i don't think Max ever expressly stated that Charlie has a gun mounted in place of his arm, just implied it... (unless i completely missed it. i tend to read these first thing in the AM, so might miss stuff in my not-quite-awakeness)

This comment is a little meta, but I'm going ahead.

My thought when Cazza kisses Charlie was that it was 'so Max' and that it was just thrown in there for the plot to bend around. To my mind it was interchangeable with any other unpredictable yet story changing event, such as a chunk of ceiling falling down on the gun-arm, or the contours growing rollerskates, or the introduction of a new character (which I would have named Hal, no relation to HAL). To clarify, I mean interchangeable in terms of their function as random element but not necessarily interchangeable in terms of the downstream effect. I'm sure that Cazz kissing Charlie would not result in his gun going off unexpectedly.

And for some reason after that thought formed in reaction to what I had read, I did not want to put it into a comment even though the mechanism was there to do so. I had suddenly, instinctively, retreated to the safety of knowing that I'm tracking without the knowledge of the trackee, like a forager who does not want to meet the gardener and have that awkward conversation about the flavor and texture of a ripe tomato and whether it's really a palm food and how many people you know who couldn't possibly without a pinch of salt on it.

Let's not mention this totally flies in the face of the fact that I have left a large number of comments already.

I think the fact that it would have been the first comment also played a factor, as that position on the page increased the sense of exposure.
