Machine Man (serial)

On the third day, Lola entered my room. Until this, she had been leaving trays of food outside. I had learned to wait until her footsteps receded, then pull myself to the door and drag in the food before the dogs descended. I would shut the door in their little faces and chew, alone.

But this day she opened the door. It was a small shock, seeing another human. She wore a green blouse and an air of hopelessness. She looked at me and her eyes glimmered. I was sitting on the carpet, surrounded by my parts. Well, parts of my parts. I had disassembled my legs and hand and arranged them in concentric circles, radiating out. It looked as if I had suffered the world’s neatest explosion. Which I kind of had. What had come out of Lola was some kind of short-range electromagnetic pulse. It had killed no-one, disturbed nothing, and hurt no body but mine.

“I want…” she said. “I think…”

These disassembled components, that didn’t mean I was fixing them. I had taken the Contours apart because I couldn’t think of anything else. I was trying to break my problem into pieces until it was small enough to handle. Because that was how you solved anything: you divided it. I was surviving on the hope of eventually reaching something fixable.

Lola said, “I think it’s really unfair of you to say this is my fault.”

“It’s not your fault.” I did not look at her as I said this, because I did not really believe it.

“They put it in me.” She took one step closer, on the narrow, component-free path between the door and me. Her foot landed beside a three-foot long section of titanium that had once controlled my plane stabilization. This was part of my problem: there were many sections that were machine-welded. I couldn’t open them up, not with domestic tools. “They put that thing in my chest and didn’t even tell me.”

I almost didn’t say it. Then I did. “You could have calmed down.”

“I could have calmed down.”

“Yes.”

“I tried, Charlie.”

I shrugged.

“Charlie. I tried.”

I picked up a radial bolt. I wasn’t even sure where this had come from. I had made notes, in the beginning. I should have kept that up.

“My heart just wouldn’t slow down. It—”

“I notice people are very selective about their bodies,” I told the bolt. “Any time their body does something good, they claim it. They look good, they play football, they run a marathon, they say, I did this. But something goes wrong, it’s not I any more. It’s a problem with their foot. Their brain needs more sleep. They don’t like their skin. Suddenly it’s not them. It’s just the body they’re stuck in.”

“What are you saying?”

“Nothing.” I rolled the bolt around in my hand. “I’m just making an observation.”

Silence. The door closed with a click.

What a jerk.

Was my first reaction. Not surprising though, since he's always been somewhat disconnected from others.

hmmm... maybe contours v2 could be valve controlled instead of emp suspectable transistors.. or a steam based solution like steampunk, or dr loveless.. charlie in a top hat?

or.... he could just protect the circuitry with a Faraday cage..

All I can picture is a three year old in his toy room with all of his toys laying about him, talking to them as if they were to be his army.

I forget now, but did he ever carry out his plans to modify his brain chemistry? I remember him talking to the assistant about regret and how to manipulate the brain into not feeling it. Or is he just naturally such an ass?

Quite an astute observation his brain made. He should thank it ;)

This reminds me of a book that might interest you, Max: "How to Build a Robot Army" by Daniel H. Wilson, Ph.D. It's got a bunch of important things to consider when you think of what a "realistic" robot might and might not be able to do.

He's also written "How to Survive a Robot Uprising" as well.

Exactly Isaac, thats what Im all about. For a genius to miss that simple of a solution, and such an easy one to implement at that...

The problem with intelligence is that it has a bad habit of missing the obvious in an attempt to solve the impossible.

You can't blame Charlie for failing to anticipate EMP attack, though. He wasn't building parts for combat.

I mean, uh, that's just my opinion.

I'm kinda surprised that his legs were not shielded. I mean, his legs were made out of metal... Then again, it could have been an alloy that is not very electrically conductive, and if it was, the chassis may not have been grounded to the reactor. (there are benefits and disadvantages either way, such as less wiring, but an external power source could trip a breaker or worse... I picture him jumping and landing on some powerlines.)

A long time ago, when I was young, naive and still worked for the military-industrial complex, I worked with a Mil-spec computer system. It was basically a microcomputer in an armoured box.

It had a 'nuclear event' input that would essentially switch the damn thing completely off in about half a second so that the EMP blast would not trash it. Fine for a ground based combat system, not great for a fighter jet, I expect.

Decommissioning the hard drives was fun... there were two procedures. The first one involved purging the drive by over-writing it 40-times with 1's then 0's before removing the drive and cutting it in half. The second procedure was to insert a live frag grenade in the drive bay, pull the pin and then run away quickly.

Never got to try the second procedure :(

He's going to have to keep that other arm/hand around until he finds a solution to the EMP problem.

I like the space in "no body" rather than "nobody". Subtle yet great!

Why doesn't Lola outfit him from her armfuls of legs? At least then he would have SOMETHING...
