Machine Man (serial)

Something blew through me in a gust, like wind made of needles. My legs twitched. My ears rang. And that was it. The house was silent. I looked at Lola and she looked at me and we both seemed to be okay. Lola said, “Are you…” and so did I. She took a step toward me, and, when nothing bad happened, took another. We smiled. I held out my arms and she ran into them.

“Oh, Charlie. I was scared.”

“It’s all right. We’re all right, I think.”

“What was that?”

“Something that didn’t work.” I kissed the top of her head. “I guess.”

“I thought you were going to die.” She shuddered. “I thought I was going to kill you.”

A moment passed. There was an odd scent in the air: something acrid.

Lola looked up. “The dogs are quiet.”

We listened.

“We should check on Angelica.” Lola reached for the door handle. I went to step out of the way, but didn’t. I tried that again.

“Charlie?”

That scent was familiar. It was the smell you got when you plugged a circuit into a power supply it wasn’t designed for. The smell of fused transistors.

“Charlie?”

A digital clock radio sat on the bedside table: its face had gone dark. On a shelf, a small stereo that normally glowed red from its power button: nothing.

“Are you two okay?” Angelica’s voice floated toward us. “The power’s gone out!”

Lola touched my arm. “Charlie?”

“No,” I said. “No, no, no.”

“What is it?”

I opened my mouth and closed it again. I couldn’t say it: You killed my legs.

So, I guess that she figuratively exploded (in a realistic way).

Hazarding a guess, but EMP?

Looks like they had a back-up plan.

It would give away their position better than anything, and it has the bonus of disabling Charlie's legs. Brilliant!

On a side note, is it horrible that I thought the smell was coming from something happening to the dogs?

I knew it! Ha Ha! Although I'm it would have been fun to watch you kill off a main characters and see how well you could write yourself out of the corner. Oh Well.

Does anyone else feel like we're reading over the shoulder of someone else who is reading a Choose-Your-Own-Adventure book?

I think EMP too. But how come Lola is still alive then with her electronic heart??

To me this is a *huge* surprise! @Adam - I like your theory that this was specifically targeted at Charlie as a back-up plan. I was with the commenters yesterday who were guessing there would just be ten words today... Did anyone take Ciaran's ten-dollar bet? (Max, I assume, would not have been eligible.)

Maybe Lola's heart uses vacuum tubes, which are resistant (immune?) to EMP.

The way of all flesh, er, electronics...

I wonder what other tricks Lola's heart can perform?

EMP generator technology seems to have come a long way. It now can fit in a chest that is complete with everything else needed in said chest.

Also, bit of an oops on Docs part. I would have shielded my legs. Easy enough to do, fatal mistake potentially by not doing so. Passive defensive measures would be high on my list.
