Machine Man (serial)
CHAPTER THREE

My boss visited me the day before I was due to be discharged. Until this point, the only contact I’d had from him had been via e-mail. “Hey, Charlie,” he said weakly, his eyes shifting away. I made him uncomfortable. Not because of the stump. He had felt this way about me forever. “You’re doing great, they say.”

“I’m ready to go back to work.”

“You want to…” He swallowed. “Get back on the horse, then.”

“Yes. Can’t let a little accident derail everything.”

“Accident.” He nodded. “Exactly. That’s just what it was.”

“Also, I have a new project.”

“Ah.” His lip trembled. “Well.”

“I am entitled to perform free-ranging research,” I said. “That’s part of my spec.”

“Of course it is. You know we’ll support you in whatever you do.”

“I want to get back to work.”

“Some of the labs… they’re not equipped for a… for someone with your… able-bodied… issues. I mean, we’ll take care of it. It’s just—”

“Don’t bother,” I said. “I won’t need any of that. Oh, except for tomorrow. If you could arrange for someone to carry me down to the labs, that would be great. But after then, I’ll be fine.”

My boss went silent for a few moments. His name was D. Peters. I forget what the D stood for. E-mails from him just showed up as D. Peters. “Charlie, if you want to take a few months—”

“I don’t,” I said. “Just get someone to carry me, thank you.”

wooo, first comment!

I'm liking the subtle reference to trains "Can't let a little accident derail everything"

Rather ominous. I still would like to know what exactly our hero DOES. besides have a rather awkward personality that is strangely assertive, yet insecure. employment wise is what i want to know.

love your style!

This is pretty much the opposite of how my work treated me after an accident with them. They INSISTED I get back to work the next day. They couldn't force it, but they didn't want their insurance to spike up after a loss of time accident. Went into work and after 2 hours, the meds I was on made me too nauseous and tired to do anything more.

Anyways, loving the story, Max! Can't wait until tomorrow morning for more!

In keeping with my promise to steal Adam's idea: I predict he'll build a new leg. :P

No, my *actual* prediction is...

I can't come up with one, actually. A wheel seems that it would be the next logical step, but that would be next to impossible with one leg still attached... So he'll have to cut off the remaining one...

And then he'll effectively be a Segway. Add some better gyroscopes, and he could balance better... Meaning that he can increase the speed. He may well be able to get up to, say... 40 miles an hour (About 64 km/h for you, Max) before he's in danger of his face tearing itself off. He may well be able to do without cars for anything closer than the state border.

I like it so far. Guess that means I *do* have a prediction, too.

That's it Charlie--short and to the point! Charlie represents the new economic era of go getter--the whole phoenix from ashes scenario. And D.Peters represents the old industries that are falling us due to bad or indecision. Ok, if you don't like that....look up the word symbiosis and that covers this page!

Why does he need to be carried, he only lost his left leg, right? Pair of crutches and he should be fine. Well, as far as getting around goes.

I assume they are all in India, based on the knee-jerk carrying of one another from place to place.

D is clearly for Deepak.

D for Dick.
as in Richard.

That would be really cool and pretencious if he initialld his name with his nick name instead of his real name.

Just a heads up that this is way more enjoyable whilst read on a blackberry waiting for a connecting flight to LA...it makes a piece of my soul grow back. I was going to say D is "Dick" too. I keep waiting for you to post a stinker and every day you spin email gold.
Nice job Max.

OH, I'VE MOVED ON...

Predicting the future is only so exciting for so long. I've decided to write my own novel...

The Parallel Novel/Inner-monologue. (from the perspective of his leg as if written by a child with ADD)

"Ow! That hurt! Hey...what happened to my other half?! hmmm...I guess it could have been worse. I know Head is smart. He'll build me a new other half. I hope...

Wow! This lady gives a good leg massage. I think she wants me. No, wait. She just wants to build me another foot and such. I don't think Head likes this. I believe Head thinks he can build me a better one than her. However, she looks good. Maybe we'll allow her to help.

Who is this dude? The boss? I don't think he believes in Head. Head wants to work. This man thinks him to be crazy. I miss my other half. Hopefully someone will carry us down to the lab to do research. I want my other half back. Maybe Head will build a better one. I know he likes building. Maybe he'll let me run fast or fly. "

I'm thinking Adam's version is going to be bigger than Max's. Sorry. Mr. Barry's. MB's.

Huh. Weird.

Hello!

Just wanted to let you know I have been enjoying the book so far. Even though I know it is finished, I have opted for the page by page version. It is so much more fun to have your day brightened by a page of Machine Man!
You make me laugh, that's a compliment right there :).

I'm still intrigued by the missing leg - where do legs go when they are separated from the brain - and I've heard about phantom legs replacing, {invisibly that is}, the physical leg - where is your phantom leg? ....... well, I suppose, I'm merely articulating my curiosity Maxie.
