Machine Man (serial)

That night I couldn’t sleep. It wasn’t the phantom pain. It was Carl. He crawled into my mind and I couldn’t get him out. I woke every half-hour, sticky with sweat, trying to escape Carl as he chased me armlessly through the corridors. Once he stood in the Clamp, looking at me as the plates closed in. His eyes said: How could you do this, Charlie? You know I need some parts.

I sat up, shivering. Carl was a bad guy, wasn’t he? He had tried to kill Lola and steal my arms. Or if that wasn’t quite true, he was a destroyer of relationships. I had seen the look in Lola’s eyes, when she’d said: He doesn’t have any arms. Carl was poison.

I had asked Cassandra Cautery to fire him. That was what I’d said, in her office yesterday. She nodded once. I walked out of that room happy, thinking my problems were solved.

But now I was wracked with guilt. The guy had no arms. Without my help, he would get, what, hospital prosthetics? Those were awful. You might as well strap on flippers.

I groaned. I had to fix this. As logical as it was for me to get Carl fired, a part of me knew it was wrong. And that part was my brain’s ventromedial prefrontal cortex. It was the area responsible for guilt. Well, I was going to do something about that.

That last sentence is plain brilliant.

I have to admit though, I kinda hoped he asked Cassandra to amputate another one of Carl's body parts, which would instantly solve the apparent love crisis. Also, it would open up possibilities for an adult spin-off novel ;)

?ventromedial prefrontal cortex? - seems a little contrived...

Sorry about the first comment, I was messing around with the forum system when I was bored.

I am not sure about his planned lobotomy. Without feeling of guilt and sitting on his Contours, his next rampage could be something out of Godzilla movies

+1 to electricheads comment.
The VMF is also largely responsible for decision making altogether. I wonder at what point in his operation would he no longer have the capacity to decide whether it was a good idea or not.
Then again, he's not exactly batting a thousand on decision making.
I'm still waiting on that comic relief. Perhaps his botch lobotomy will leave him with a split or altered personality that is cool, confident with a dry wit. I'm just saying think about it.

Some claim lobotomy, I say "goes back to the snuffler and begs her not to fire Carl. She refuses, unless he sleeps with her...

He makes a counter offer, "how about a three-way with Lola?"

Cassandra says, "yeah a three way - me, you and Carl!"

Stuff happens. Dirty stuff, involving several people's ventromedial prefrontal cortexes. The end.

@David

Woah! This is getting dangerously like the alt.tastless news group discussion of the term 'Squick'!

That seems to be the way Charlie solves all his problems. Either by kicking, or removing body parts.

Maybe he could streamline the process and start kicking off body parts?

Or kicking off other peoples body parts. If he tampers with his brain, he could transform himself into a psychopath........er, yeah, maybe he has that going on already.

Seriously though, some women get addicted to cosmetic surgery, but this is so much farther than that. One this I have to really ask though...

If he does get Lola, or even Cassandra, won't his relationship be rather difficult... you know, without legs. He is gonna need to build bed-legs just in case.

I don't want him to get a lobotomy :( if he starts tacking that out he will completely change from the character we know and love :(
