Machine Man (serial)

“I understand,” Cassandra Cautery said. “They’re your parts.” She spread her arms. “What’s to get? They’re your parts.”

I nodded. “My parts. Exactly.”

“I had a sister once. She used to borrow my clothes. I’d be looking for this one particular belt, and she’d walk in wearing it.” She shook her head. “It drove me insane.” We were in her office again. This time she was on the sofa. Her office had a sofa. I may not have mentioned that earlier. It was green leather. Also her office was very spacious, one wall was glass, and the shelves were lined with thick red and green books. Some kind of trophy acted as a bookend on the top shelf. The place had a quiet, musty feel I would not have naturally associated with Cassandra Cautery. “And that was just clothes.”

“Right,” I said.

She sighed. “You know who I’m mad at?”

I nodded. “Lola.”

She hesitated. “No, Dick.”

“Dick?”

“Your boss. Dick Peters.”

“Oh.” I could never remember that guy. “Why?”

Cassandra Cautery leaned forward. “You know it was Dick who authorized Carl’s arms.”

I looked away, because this did not sound very true. “No, I didn’t know that.”

“It was.” Silence. “Charlie.” I looked at her. She had her hands together, as if about to pray. “I will fix this. You’re my brain. Anything that upsets you, I’ll fix.”

“How?”

“Name it.” She leaned back. “What do you want me to do?”

“Seriously?”

“Seriously.”

I eyed her. She seemed genuine. “Well…” And then I said something I’m not very proud of.

Poor Dick, can never refuse anything when she does "that thing".

I love how she refers to Charlie as her brain now.

Weirdly enough "Some kind of trophy acted as a bookend" seemed to stick out to me here. A bit of misdirection all through the page too, which is cool.

Nice cliffhanger reminds me how a week day serial can be so much more compelling in a different way than just plain reading a book.

Can't wait until Monday now for the next page!

Awesome, Max! I love it.

>>“Well…” And then I said something I’m not very proud of.

"Rip his bloody arms off!" perhaps? No, doesn't sound like our Charlie, brain to Cassandra the snuffling lawyer. Hmm, guess I'll just have to wait and see what disaster our hero brings on himself tomorrow.

Wow! The suggestive power of the Machine Man Cliffhanger makes readers believe it is Friday!

It's a cruel trick, Max. Nothing is worse then thinking it is a Friday when it is really a Thursday. At least, for us working Joes.

I reckon tomorrow will be a one liner... just to heighten the tension.

You know for all the whining Pev does about Friffhangers, Fridays do offer the most conversation between us. ;)
We should start a forum... so that was not on topic exactly, but it was a sweet idea.

But why stop at a one liner, why not a single word or just a "..." Oh the rage, oh the agony, at waking up to ... oh the arguments back and forth about that one.

I am SO glad it's Thursday! but I'm already projecting to Friday figuring if this is what Max leaves us with Thursday, then Friday's going to be like pulling ourselves up over the cliff, getting on firm ground and then feeling the cliff itself give way as we lose balance and the walls recede and....

(btw, i'm the dumbest of all of ya. i just got "Friffhangers" as "FRIday + clIFFHANGER...i thought it was some Aussie thing...hey is tomorrow some bank holiday down under???!!)

I'm with you gStein! And I love the line "I could never remember that guy." Wish I had more bosses like that.

"I had a sister once"? Wow, that's some cold nostalgia there.

I keep thinking that there's some sexual tension between Cassandra and Charlie..and now that's how broken up with Lola..who knows what he's going to ask her?
