Machine Man (serial)

“Carl was in an accident,” Lola said. She saw something about the way the Versitor was strapped around Carl’s shoulder she didn’t like, and began fooling with it. “He’s not allowed to talk about it, but… well, obviously it was traumatic.”

“An accident,” I said.

“And it’s so lucky, because there are these amazing prosthetics here. I was just telling Carl, the technology today, losing a limb, even an arm, it doesn’t have to be a disability.” Her fingers ran over Carl’s bulging shoulders. I had to say, Carl was ripped. He had muscles in places I had only seen in anatomy textbooks. It made no sense to me that someone who put this much work into his body would want to remove parts of it. “It can be an opportunity.” She smiled, one hand resting lightly on Carl’s shoulder. “What you’ve gone through, Charlie, how you’ve turned your experience into a positive, that’s exactly what Carl needs to hear right now.”

I glanced behind me. The guards were still in the corridor, alert but not attempting to drag me off anywhere. So apparently I was to be contained, not captured.

“I’ll leave you two alone,” Lola said, and headed for the doorway. I stepped in front of her. She looked at me, eyes wide with surprise.

“We need to talk,” I said.

"We need to talk." Men know when they hear that they're not going to enjoy what's coming. I wonder if Lola will have the presence of mind to look guilty, mumble something about being busy right now, and then head for the pub as fast as her old fashioned flesh legs will carry her?

Max,
I just finished "Apathy and other small victories" which gave me a new perspective on how funny a book can be (I know you agree since you wrote the recommendation on the back which is why I bought it).
I must say that there is a sufficient lack of maxbarian comical wit in the pages since I started paying for this thing. These last few pages have the feel of those obscure serious comic strips in the sunday paper that I never had the energy to finish(three cells filled with all those dialogue clouds was brutal).
If this guy is such a loser(of limbs and in life), can you bring in a new character that just stands by and makes wry observations? Or maybe a parrot that is trained in dry sarcasm? It could be a mechanical parrot to go with the machined motif. I'm just saying it's a possibility.

I thought it was a really good point, bringing up the aesthetics of the ripply muscly look, which would be sacrificed for the Trap-Jaw style arm.

Ah, but why wouldn't a person who spent all the time and effort honing their body to the physical limits positively dismember themselves at the chance to have new parts grafted onto them that vastly exceed the capabilities of their fleshy bits. Carl will probably be able to bench press 3 tonnes or more with the "light" mechanical arms. All without the testicle shriveling properties of steroids! Plus he can give the reach around no matter where or how his partner is standing. The possibilities are endless!

Tim makes a good point, I think. A comic-relief guy really could be a lot of fun, though of course he's got to add something to the plot as well.

What, has he claimed Carl's arm? Is he going to pee on it?
