Machine Man (serial)

Cassandra Cautery was not pleased to hear about my phantom pain. I hadn’t meant to tell her. I was sitting in her office, talking about how the surgeons should remove my arm, and her eyes drifted down to my left calf. I realized I was absent-mindedly kneading the titanium there, as if it were a sore muscle.

“Everything all right?” she said.

“Just a glitch.” I forced myself to put my hand in my lap. “Nothing significant.”

Cassandra Cautery rose from her office chair and walked around the desk. She stopped on the rug, rested her butt against the desk, and folded her arms. I didn’t like the look of this. “Charlie, imagine we’re building a body.” I opened my mouth to say I was building a body, but she held up one finger. “And it’s a wonderful body, one we’re very interested in getting right. Let’s also say that all the ideas for how to build this body, they come from one particular brain. That brain is very important, wouldn’t you say?”

“Yes.”

She nodded. “In fact, it’s crucial. If we are building this body, the one thing we must do, the absolute top priority, is keep the brain safe. Do you agree?”

“Yes.”

“Well, to me, Charlie, the body is not those pieces you’re wearing. It’s not the prosthetics themselves. It’s the capacity to produce them. The body I’m building, Charlie, is a corporate entity with the ability to create artificial parts. Do you see the difference?”

I said nothing.

“I think you do. And you’re the brain, Charlie. You’re the thing I must protect. So when I hear about these…” She gestured at my legs. “These unexpected technical problems—”

“Glitch,” I said. “One glitch. Which is temporary.”

“When I hear about that, do you know what I feel like doing? I feel like plucking that brain right out of the body and putting it in a jar. Somewhere safe, so that no matter what happens to the body, what mistakes are made, what glitches we may encounter, the brain is safe. You can understand that, can’t you? The need to separate the brain from the body?”

“But I’m the body,” I said. “I’m both. They can’t be separated.”

“Imagine they could,” she said, and that was when I realized I hadn’t seen Carl for a while.

RoboCarl?
Termincarlter?
the cyber carls?

or...

suddenly the room fills with a whimsical whiring chime.. at the same time, embers of light start appearing arround a faint form. quickly, the form became more dence, and solid, showing groteskly modified arms and legs of various design. just as quickly the light and sound show had started, it faded away leaving in its place this mechanical creature of horiffic design.
after half a moments pause, it spoke from a voice synthatised to scare people half to death..
"We are carl. Resistance is stupid. Expect us."

I actually find parts of this horrible to read. "please don't let it be what I think it is" is a constant thought.

I was skeptical about this concept Max, but I really think you're pulling it off excellently!

I've been wondering what Carl is up to. His name is so simple, "Carl". He's like the invisible hand. It doesn't sound complex in name, but it's always up to something devious.

There are just so many possibilities as to where this can go! But I have to admit, that it would make sense for the brains of the operation to be experimenting on someone else, at least at first.

I am loving this Cassandra Cautery character more and more (for a brief couple of pages I thought you'd lost her Max). It's awesome to see the sinister side becoming more predominant.

I too have often wondered how one could take a particular genius and remove that ugly, soft, gooey humanity (ego/emotion) by feeding all their thoughts through a computer filter and getting an end product of pure no strings attached brilliance. It would eliminate any possibility of emotional ("give me recognition or I'll hold out the key detail") or financial ("it's my IP I deserve a cut of the profit") ransom.
The problem is that human interaction injects errors into computers, so the end product is likely to be something completely random.

I did the same mistake as Felix. *head butts table* That comment is going to show up every page, and it's not going only annoy me but everyone else. GAH. I'm never commenting again. Sorry Max...Sorry everyone.

p.s. seen as I am never commenting again, just wanna say that the book is going great Max. :) Good luck.

Just got caught up today, and I gotta say, this has been a really gripping read.

Just knowing that the writer's guess of where the story is going to go is as good as mine makes it feel...somehow action packed.

Anyways, keep it up, can't wait until Monday's entry!

all i could think about was how squishy brains are, compared to how non squishy brain removers probably are, and the mental image was brain oozing between metal flanges.

So I've been collecting pages since Machine Man started. And paid for my subscription, but it's only now that I've actually read the story. Amazing! Great work Max, however I am wondering two things.
(1) Is the choice of Charlie and Lola as character names reflective of the children's book characters? Is this Fin's favourite book, hence the reason for the choice?
(2) How will this be translated into a book? Will you stop it at a particular point to make us buy the book? Will it just be the total story bound together as a book? Something else?
