Machine Man (serial)
I planned to lose my left arm on Friday. I didn’t tell Lola this. It would be a surprise. I had a robotic arm ready to snap in, plus two backups in case anything went wrong with the primary, which it wouldn’t, because the primary was a piece of art. It was by far the smartest thing I’d ever built, and, not wanting to boast, but I have built some pretty smart things. Once I created a microbe that ate garbage. The idea was you open your trash can, throw in your table scraps, and they’re gone within the hour. They were really hungry. But that project never got out of QA, because if the microbes ever got out of the trash can, well, they would eat everything. There were some PR concerns about a trash-can-eats-man scenario. Which was not really the fault of the microbes, in my opinion. I felt someone from one of the military departments should have come up with a safe receptacle. But anyway. There would be no such problem with the arm, because there was only one customer: me. And I loved it.
I was also excited about being able to do this amputation properly: in a sterile environment, while unconscious. I imagined myself slipping gently off to sleep in Better Future’s brand new operating theater under the gaze of a green-masked anesthetist, waking to the new arm already attached. I could see myself swinging my legs off the table, saying, “I’ll get that,” when the nurse went to fix my gown, and my new arm swiveling behind me, knotting the cord with machine precision. I imagined opening the door to Lola’s suite with articulated fingers, the desire on her face when she saw what I had become now. But none of that worked out.

And, to be honest, I don't think any sane doctor would preform amputations to order. So to speak.

Charlie had expected that his new artificial arm would be an advancement because he could reach around back and undo his own gown, I guess being able to reach in a way that normal arms can not.
However, this brings an important human sense in to play, Kinesthetic sense, the ability to know where any part of your body is in relation to other bits. An example of this is that when you close your eyes (and your not drunk) you can still touch the tip of your nose (or any other specified part of your body) with your right index finger.
Now I am assuming (and please shoot me down if I am wrong) that amputees with artificial limbs can't do this.
Sooooo.... Charlie might reach round to untie the gown and accidentally pinch his neck or something.
JOKE ALERT:
A pirate with a peg leg, hook hand and an eye patch is telling his ship mates how he last the various parts.
"Ar! This leg I lost when boarding a Spanish treasure ship - Cannon blew it clean off!"
"Ar! This hand I lost fighting in a bar in Antigua, cut clean off with a cutlass!"
"How did you lose the eye?" asks Roger the Cabin boy.
"Ar! A seagull flew over as I was checking the main sail and shat in my eye." says the monocular pirate with a sad face.
"How did that make you loose an eye?" a puzzled ship mate asks.
"Well, was not long after I lost me hand and I wasn't quite used to the hook!"

I don't think he's mentioned anything about having feeling in his artificial legs yet though, so maybe not.

Clearly I had nothing insightful to say, hence the rather lame "wow".
