Machine Man (serial)
CHAPTER THIRTY-THREE

I clomped through the Better Future corridors escorted by security guards, doctors, and lab techs. Sometimes we passed other security guards, doctors, and lab techs, who stopped what they were doing to stare at me. From their expressions, I was either an awe-inspiring technological miracle or the worst thing they had ever seen. I wasn’t sure myself. As we filed down the stairs, though, the Contour Three hooves cantilevered on each step, and I had to admire that. There is something deeply satisfying about a mechanical system that works just like it’s supposed to. I’m not sure if everyone feels that way. It might be an engineering thing. But by the time we reached the bottom of those stairs, I was kind of in love.

Then we emerged into a corridor with a guy who might or might not have been trying to hide his revulsion. I stopped in front of him. Hands pulled at me, trying futilely to tug me onward. I said, “What?”

“Nothing.” Young, in a dusty suit and tie. He could have been from any department, except one that did real work. His eyes flicked at me and away.

“Look at me.” I waited until he dragged his gaze to my face. Disgust, definitely. “You prick,” I said.

Jason put a hand on my gun-arm, as if he had any ability to influence where I chose to move. “Dr. Neumann, please.”

“I’m going out to save this company’s ass. I’m risking my life to clean up the mess you guys made.”

“Shut him down,” someone said, and someone else said, “No, wait.”

“Dr. Neumann.” Jason forced himself between me and the suit. “Please. I beg you.”

“I want some respect.” I felt myself choking up. “I at least want some respect.”

“We all respect you very much,” he said. “Please. Let’s go.”

From my favourite web-comic- it feels somewhat relevant.

Some respect, who doesn't want that?

As a famous TV bartender once said, "I'm better than dirt! Well, most kinds of dirt. I mean, not that fancy store-bought dirt. That stuff's loaded with nutrients. I can't compete with that stuff."

I'm kind of interested to find out if Charlie still needs to eat. He'd still feel the urge to, out of habit, given his pastry obsession, but since he lacks certain... er... output devices, there'd be some practical constraints.

He probably no longer has intestines or kidneys, either, although he may still have a stomach, and definetely still has an oesophagus. Maybe the oesophagus is just clamped shut?

The parts of him that still have blood in them would need nutrients somehow..

Max Barry's readers: thinking way too much about things they're not meant to since Page 1.

Thanks, Max. I now have Aretha Franklin singing "Respect" on repeat on my head.

@CrystalR: Isn't he on life support or something? I tend to think that the abdomen unit provides nutrients through intravenous therapy, and his blood is filtered by the abdomen unit as well. Or perhaps some other part he's got.

But I don't think that you can provide energy that way... Max! Answers!

Going for the super-soldier angle, you could have nutrient cartridges that plug directly into your blood stream. Like a more direct version of an MRE.

It could also tie the soldiers in, branding-wise. Having proprietary nutrient cartridges means that they would literally be customers for life. And nobody's going to trust their life on a knock-off cartridge.

RESPECT THIS! <mental override of the gun shutoff enabling it> <some loud gun and blood spattering noises followed by some silence>

Lola crawls in, sees what happened, leaves him, Charlie goes chaotic evil anarchist cyborg.

Crystal, as long as the nutrient packages only supply nutrients for the human part, and not like motor oil or something, it shouldn't be too difficult for anyone with just basic knowledge of chemistry, nutrition and to a lesser extent anatomy to at least refill the nutrient packages (I'm thinking like refilling a printer cartridge).... most of logistical leg work of getting the various nutrients where they belong, should still be getting done by the blood and heart still. Though, I suppose they could combine "nutrients" for both man and machine and hi-jack the bodies blood to get lubricants to the machine parts.
