Machine Man (serial)
“We have a problem,” I said.
“What?” said Lola. “Let’s go. Pick me up, so you can run real fast.” She held out her arms.
“I’m not good on stairs.”
“What?”
“The Contours. They don’t handle stairs well.”
“What does that mean?”
“A bug, I guess. I haven’t had a chance to go through the software—”
“What does that mean for us?”
“Oh. It means we can’t take the stairs.”
“Who’s talking about stairs?” Lola said. “Pick me up and let’s jump out of here.”
“I won’t be able to hold you.”
“Sure you can.” She spread her hands. “I’m little.”
“Lola, at 12Gs, you’ll weigh as much as a small car.” She looked a little insulted, so I added, “That’s not me. That’s physics.”
“Maybe we can sneak down an elevator.”
“I just heard the elevator. Between it and us are people who want to kill us.”
“Did you say kill?”
“Yes! Look at this.” I showed her my bicep.
“Oh, no!”
“Exactly. I’m damaged.”
“Injured.”
“What?”
“Injured,” Lola said. “You’re injured.”
“That’s what I said.”
“You said…” She shook her head. “They shot you?”
“Yes.”
“Why would they do that?”
I hesitated. “I kind of killed the CEO.” Lola’s eyebrows leapt. “By accident.”
“Oh, no.”
“There are extenuating circumstances. Trust me.”
“I do,” she said. Outside, I heard approaching footsteps.
“The thing that really irritates me is ten floors down, I have a set of drill legs just sitting there.”
“Can you stomp through the floor?”
“It’s reinforced concrete.”
“That’s a no?”
“Obviously it’s a no! It’s not going to collapse if it’s—”
“Don’t get snippy.”
I breathed. “I’m sorry. It’s just that I strongly believe our lives are in danger unless we figure a way out of this room in the next ten seconds.”
Someone thumped on the door. Lola and I fell silent. She snaked one hand into mine. I felt that strange attractive force stir once more, trying to pull my fingers into her chest.
“Get us out of here, Charlie,” Lola whispered.
I decided I would kick anyone who came through that door. It was not a great plan, and would probably end badly for some combination of me, Lola, and the guards outside, but it was all I had. I took a step forward, moving Lola behind me.
The door banged open. And I just stood there, my plan already forgotten, because the person in the doorway was not who I expected. It was a security guard. I was right about that, at least. It was Carl.

technical remark/question from a non native speaker & physicist: "at 12Gs" means? 12 gravitaional acceleration? that he will fall 12 seconds? so it is a velocity? velocity does not change mass ~ Charlie wouldnt say such a thing ~ perhaps its just a language problem, but I am confused :)

Objects would feel 12 times as heavy under such conditions, and yes, the comparison with a small car is not a compliment. Take the weight of a small car (though standards of 'small' may vary) at 1000 kg and divide by 12, and at 83 kg Lola can't exactly be called 'petite'...

Well let's say it is about 10 feet per story. I am thinking Lola weighs about 110 pounds?
Her velocity at the bottom would be the square root of 2 x G x (10 feet/story x 12 stories) = around 48.5m/s
Apparently, the impulse is final momentum - initial momentum at impact, and also equals the amount of force x time taken for impact. So say his legs take about a full second to bring him to a stop after his jump.
The amount of force needed would be equal to the final momentum (48.5 x 110 pounds) divided by the time taken (1s) which is around 5334.7N. Since gravitational force is around 9.8N, it means he actually needs to exert 544 G's! But this is for a 1 second impact. In order for him to only exert 12 G's, the impact has to be (48.5 x 110 pounds) / (12 * 9.8) which is 45 seconds. This makes me visualize the matrix slow-mo landings where it takes him 45 seconds after touching the ground to stop completely.
Anyway! It would seem that she would in fact be subjected to ridiculous amounts of force on any kind of impact. So he is right. Of course there is also the issue that I just googled around for the equations, so my math is probably way off. Can we get someone who knows physics to tell us about the 12 G's?

What I really came here to say (before getting distracted) was that I am eagerly waiting for the mechanical arms vs legs (and one hand and some fingers) showdown!

Im loving this more and more. It's actually more fun reading the pages at least 3-4 hours after they are posted so you can read some of the comments too.

The damaged line was a nice bit. Solidifies the personality of who, exactly, Charlie is.

Just saying, its a possibility, or you know, showdown, either way.

Apart from "Of Mice and Men" when's the last time you've ever seen what should be harmless physical affection kill in a novel.
Maybe that's why Carl came back to the company, to kill Charlie because he killed his wife by hugging her to death...?

However, Charlie did ask to 'get rid' of him.
