Machine Man (serial)

The beautiful girl led Cassandra Cautery and me to what I can only call a sitting room. I say this as someone who is not totally sure what a sitting room is. I mean something that looked stolen from an 18th Century Victorian mansion: heavy drapes, busy wallpaper, and chairs with curving, detailed legs. Turned, I think is the word. I felt elegant just being here.

“You know who we’re meeting,” said Cassandra Cautery, once the girl had gently closed the door on us. This was not posed as a question, although I didn’t know the answer. “The Manager.”

“The manager?”

“The Manager.”

“Which manager?”

“The Manager,” she said. “The Manager. You know. The Manager.”

“That’s his title?”

“Of course not.” She began pacing around the chairs. “His title is Chief Executive Officer. But everyone calls him the Manager. Because that’s what he does. He manages. You know when Congress wanted to shut us down after the Boston VL38s turned out to be not so non-lethal? Of course you don’t. Because he managed it.”

As a general rule, I did not pay attention to company communications. They only made me aware of inconvenient obligations. But now Cassandra Cautery mentioned it, The Manager did sound familiar. I think his name had come up in a few of Jason’s lurid stories, the ones he told to impress other lab assistants. They ended like: and nobody ever saw them again. “The Manager.”

“Exactly.” She slipped one thumbnail into her mouth and began gnawing at it. “The Manager.”

Isn't that "led Cassandra Cautery and me"?

I really liked the descriptions and the exchange in this page.

Is it just me that's thinking that the Manager is going to turn out to be 4' tall or something?

I don't know why Cassandra is worried, can't she just "do that thing" :)

Yes, it should be, Mr. Chuckles.

I really liked this too. I can't help loving Cassandra. It seems likely that the Manager does not fall for "that thing" Cassandra does.

Is the not-so-non-lethal Boston VL38s a reference to the riot after the Boston Red Sox came back from a 3-0 game deficit to win the American League Championship Series in 2004? I think one person died after police attempted to use a anti-riot rubber bullet gun to subdue the crazy fans.

I also came on here to comment on the grammatical mistake, but enough people have preceded me that the only thing I can do now is mention that I was gonna do it for the sake of stroking my own ego.

At any rate, I rather liked this page. Very ominous and stuff.

Just wanted to let you know that this is fantastic and was even better after I got back from a two week vacation and read the backlog. It was like swimming in a refreshing pool for a few minutes as opposed to having a cold glass of water.

Keep it up.

Let me ask you a question, since I know you are OCD about rewrites and reviewing and all that; which would you say is most true of the options below?

The preceding comments about grammatical errors are like:
A.) sharp knives in your side
B.) bug bites
C.) being late for a high school test only to find out when you get there that the test is over and you are naked
D.) a cool breeze on a warm day

@ Minter: E) All of the above. This is the sort of error I like to smugly correct in other people.

The Manager is a much better title than The Dick. Which is what I imagine they call Mr. Peters when they think they're out of range of recording devices.

There were no Victorian mansions in the 18th century. Victorian era was 19th century... I won't tell the manager ;)

@Ian isn't the not so non-lethal substance the one that, in the beginning, forced them to change the glass in the Glass Room to green plastic?
