Machine Man (serial)

Carl opened the limo door and I emerged into bright sunshine to two dozen Better Future employees lining the path to the lobby. When they saw me, they began to clap. Carl lifted me into a waiting wheelchair; there were cheers. As he pushed me past the crowd, they put out hands for high-fives. I saw a woman from Human Resources who had never made eye contact with me before, not once, and as I passed she whispered, “You’re an inspiration.” I didn’t understand what was happening.

Inside the lobby, Cassandra Cautery waited with folded arms and wet eyes. “Welcome back.” Her voice was choked with emotion, like I was her son, returned from war.

“Thanks,” I said.

She walked alongside as Carl steered me through security. The wheelchair didn’t set off any alarms, which was odd. Or maybe it did, but the guards had been instructed to let me through anyway. “I’ve taken the liberty of expanding your staff. What do you think of that Jason Huang? I left him, in case he’s a favorite, but really, his metrics are average.”

“Jason’s okay.”

She put a hand on my shoulder. Carl took the hint and stopped pushing. Cassandra Cautery looked into my eyes. She was so short, we were almost level. “It would be no problem to get rid of him. Permanently.”

“Jason’s fine,” I said.

Cassandra Cautery nodded. “I just don’t want anything to slow you down.”

“From making prosthetic legs.” I felt it was important to clarify.

“Yes,” she said. “Or furthering your project in any way that makes sense to your beautiful, brilliant mind.”

I wonder what she's thinking. Military contracts, maybe? There's always a market for supersoldier technology.

One of my favorite things about the writing: each page concludes with cliffhangers. TV struggles with that using a team of writers every week...this is *every day*. damn good max.... :-)

I've been reading the first 30 or so pages of your endeavour, Max, and I do have one preoccupation for you, thinking of the final product: Do you think that this novel being a page-a-day thing prevents you from adding descriptions? I haven't seen much physical descriptions of the protagonist's surroundings and environment. I'm not professional writer but I cannot picture "where" people are physically yet. I do like the story and the way it's going. Just a thought for you so the end novel isn't so "jarring" in terms of pacing if you were to read it like a regular novel.

One wonders what kind of lies the Better Future employees were told about the incident.

WITH YOUR SOUL!!

Or maybe you could buy copies of Max's books for all of your friends. Or wait 'till he makes it a subscription only deal.

I really liked this page. While it lacks the outright absurdity of some of the earlier pages which I found so amusing, it has a certain feel about it, despite the inevitable consequences of these events. There is a lot of potential here to lure you in, then punch you in the face a couple of times. I like it.

"break a leg" is a theatrical irony that is a paradoxical sentiment of "good luck" for those embarking on a new stage venture. Charlie is now entering a phase where his fortunes are indicated [by your teasing narrative] to be auguring an upturn in his prospects for a Better Future
