Machine Man (serial)
CHAPTER SEVEN

A nurse wheeled me out of the hospital to the limo waiting outside. On my lap was a ziplock bag full of medicines. This was a little superfluous, given the facilities we had at Better Future, but I didn’t complain. You don’t say no to a bag full of drugs. Even I knew that.

Carl, the security guard who hated me, stood beside the limo’s open door, his hands folded. I don’t know why the company kept assigning me Carl. It wasn’t like we didn’t have other security personnel. Carl saw us coming but didn’t move. He would probably stand there impassively while I clawed and heaved myself into the limo.

“Thanks for taking care of me,” I said to the nurse. “I use the word care loosely.” I hadn’t meant to snipe. I was misdirecting my annoyance at Carl.

“You’re welcome,” she said. “I hope we never see you again.”

Carl bent down and scooped me up. I had maligned him unfairly. “Wait,” I said. I wanted to explain something to the nurse. “I didn’t crush my leg because I hate myself. I did it because I have access to prosthetics that are stronger, faster, and all-round superior to biological parts.” I saw surprise spread across her face. “You see? It’s not mental illness. It’s just logical self-improvement.”

Her expression hardened. It was like she hated me more than ever. “Well, that is unfair,” she said.

"You don’t say no to a bag full of drugs."

Tut, tut!

Is something wrong with the email? I didn't get it at the regular time (nor, yet, at another time).

Legal drugs. Hmmm.

Soon my pretty. Soon he'll become the one-armed man...

It is unfair...

I want to get me some WHEELZ! Stupid legs piss me off almost every day. I'm only operating at 67% of peak efficiency, even on a *good* day. I haven't bothered figuring out how horrible I'm doing on a bad day, because I think that news would depress me too much.

@towr: It didn't post to the RSS feed, either. Methinks the two are linked.

I've always wondered about the timing of when these pages post. It's usually about 8:30 PM Melbourne time, meaning it's just after midnight the next day in the Christmas Islands, about midday in the U.K., 6:30 AM on the U.S.'s East Coast, 3:30 AM in Los Angeles, and shortly after midnight the same day in Honolulu, Hawaii.

Why post them at that time, Max? Inquiring mind(s) want to know!

Oh, right, the page!

With the last line of this page, I was surprised to see the nurse not use the contracted form of "that is." Having her say "that is unfair" in lieu of the contracted form (to me at least) changes the inflection as I think of it in my head.

Wow, I should probably find something else to talk about, rather than some niggling detail like "that is" vs. "that's." Oh well.

Fascinating line there. "Well, that is unfair."

What is going through this nurse's mind. I'm not sure you meant it to be that deep, but it works on many levels.

The drug line is great too.

Gang, are you feeling like everybody hates him? He seems like a regular guy, who just cut off his leg to spite his superior prosthetics. In the future, isn't everyone supposed to embrace technological advances, like books delivered chapter-a-day by email? Maybe it's just foreshadowing. hanging on ....

Carl should be glad. A guy with no legs is easy to carry around.

"I have access to"? That sounds unnatural even for this guy. Sounds like you were trying to hard to make the last line.

@Ian Manka re timing of posts:
Mostly I'm trying to hit a time that's the same day everywhere in the world. That means evening in Australia, early morning in Los Angeles. Otherwise Aussies would get Monday pages on Tuesdays.

The e-mailout was delayed 1 hour last night. Back to normal now!

@Max:

And to think my theory about the timing of the posts had something to do with television programmes...

Well thought-out, good sir!

If the protagonist is to be successful in his endevour to explain to his fellow dramatis personae that self-amputation is "the next big thing" he will have to make them want the same outlet for self-expression by demonstrating the desirabilty of the procedure ....... I mean its not that far-fetched, who would have thought that circumcision would have become so popular - todays Latin phrase is: "mens sane, in corpore sano"
