Machine Man (serial)

We climbed the steps to the neat, surburban house that apparently belonged to Lola’s doctor friend and stood on its darkened porch. Lola raised her hand to ring the bell, then hesitated. “One thing before we go in. Don’t criticize Angelica’s dogs.”

“Why would I criticize her dogs?”

“I’m not saying you would. Just don’t.”

The logical inconsistency here temporarily overwhelmed my pain and exhaustion. Because I was that kind of guy. “You must feel I would. Otherwise why mention it?”

“Forget it.”

“Is something wrong with her dogs?”

“No,” said Lola. “But she loves them, and if you say something, it will be awkward.”

“Okay.” Pain rising. “I won’t mention the dogs.”

Do mention them. But only say nice things.”

“All right. She has very attractive dogs.”

“Don’t say that! That sounds creepy.”

“What should I say? Lola. I’m not good at this. Just tell me what to say.”

She hesitated. “Say you like their outfits.”

I love the way Max suddenly takes you in strange new directions, introduces you to odd new characters and makes you want still more weirdness in your story life.

I just hope our hero doesn't kick the fashionista dogs through a wall or something...

Hilarious! I'm putting "Say you like their outfits" up there with:

I wanted to see Lola Banks barge through the door, her arms full of legs. (23)

I had gone seven years without a kiss, and now I had two in a week. It was the kind of data event that implied a serious contamination of laboratory conditions. (26)

It was the last time I ever saw him. All of him, I mean. (57)

My arms were missing. And not in the good way. (67)

In an ideal world, everyone would feel guilty about treating you unfairly, but you'd be able to cheat your grandmother and get a solid night's sleep. (76)

If I made a bridge that ended in mid-air, that would be a sculpture, right? But place it in between two land masses and have it ferry two hundred thousand cars per day and it's infrastructure. That makes no sense. (94)

@Todd You're exactly right, haha. Just don't forget

"It occurred to me that we had, as a civilization, reached a milestone. We had begun making better machines than people." (21)

I forwarded this page to my girlfriend, and she said "Hey, I really liked that one." We don't agree on anything. Good work.
