12th: Syrup is back in Australia and New Zealand! Apparently the publisher was checking down the back of a couch for a TV remote and instead found 2,000 copies. Or maybe it was a warehouse, not a couch. Whatever. This means that like in the US and Canada, while most bookstores won't have Syrup on the shelves, they can now easily order it in for you.

Because there's limited stock, if you're keen to get your mitts on a copy in Australia or New Zealand, now's the time to act. (By going to a bookstore and ordering a book. Was that clear already? Okay.)

9th: Today I achieved one of my life-long goals: I was used as a case study in a marketing textbook! This is cool because in Syrup, Scat lives in fear of becoming a "How Not To" case study. Now I am one! Only in a good way.

Just in case this is of interest to anyone other than myself, the textbook is Strategic Internet Marketing 2.0 by Susan & Stephen Dann, and it talks about how the NationStates.net game I wrote helped promote Jennifer Government.

28th: "It's baaaaack." Hmm, it really is hard to get the inflection right on that. But the point: Syrup is back in the US & Canada! It went briefly out of print in what was a terrible, dark time for, I think I can say, all of humanity. But especially me.

What this means: whether a bookstore has copies on its shelves or not, it can order some. So feel free, if your bookstore doesn't have a Syrup, to demand they get some. Pound the counter, too. That makes you more persuasive.

28th: Great news: Viking is going back to the presses! Yes, copies of Syrup, which have been increasingly hard to find in the US & Canada lately, will soon be nestled on bookstore shelves again.

To all those people who wrote in for the SaveOurSyrups e-mail campaign: thank you so much! Your support really helped.

I don't yet know when the new Syrups will be available. If you'd like to be notified when the book comes out, e-mail SaveOurSyrups@maxbarry.com.

11th: The film option period has expired, and I don't see any Syrup movie posters around featuring Matt Damon, so I must have the rights back. This means I get to sell them all over again, which isn't a bad deal, really. Apparently some writers make a pretty good living just re-selling film options to their books, with no film ever being made. Not bad work if you can get it. But... I'd love to see the film get up.

There's some interest from a few different production companies, so we'll see how we go.

7th: Displaying impeccable timing (with Jennifer Government just six weeks away), Viking (USA) has decided to take Syrup out of print. They've even deleted it from their online catalog, so it's like it never existed. This means unless a bookstore has Syrup on the shelf, they probably can't get it.

Thanks to those people who have written in about their Herculean struggles to find a copy. It seems that Amazon are out, but Barnes&Noble.com have a few left; apart from that, your best bet is probably picking one up second-hand.

In the long-term, there are two possibilities: either I convince Viking to crank up the presses again, or I get the rights back and find a publisher who will. Since I'm now with Doubleday, this might even work out pretty well.

1st: The Aus Readers Group, a new internet book club, is kicking off with Syrup. So if you've ever wanted to debate whether Scat is the quintessential modern man or just an idiot, now's your chance. It's also your opportunity to harass me about how long Jennifer Government's taking, because at some point I'll be joining the chat room.

1st: Yes! It's a site redesign! Now there's a new book (Jennifer Government) coming, I decided it was time to update.

There are also some new Author Notes in Syrup Extras for those of you who like to marvel at how I ever managed to finish a novel with thought processes like these.

5th: No news on the Syrup movie front, which is probably bad. I'm now starting to suspect there are a bunch of Soda screenplays being used in Hollywood as coasters.

But I do have some excellent news on the new book. If you've been dying to know what's next, you should check this out right now.

10th: A couple of months ago, my brilliant literary agent, Todd Keithley, decided to quit the industry. I don't want to start any nasty rumors, but if you said that a beautiful girl lured him to Baltimore with a siren song of seduction, I wouldn't correct you. Todd helped me to a flying start as an author, so it was a tough job to replace him. For one thing, he used to let me crash at his apartment any time I needed a place in New York and eat all his food, and it's hard to find another agent who will do that.

My new agent is Luke Janklow, of Janklow & Nesbit. This means I can deliver my long-awaited next book (I keep telling you people, it's coming) to my publisher. How this process works is I send my editor a copy, and once she's distracted by it, Luke grabs her, flips her upside down, and shakes her until all the change in her pockets fall out. We grab the money (which is called an "advance") and split. The process for selling film rights is very similar except you have to say "babe" more often.

30th: I got a look at a Syrup screenplay recently, which was pretty exciting. (There's nothing like getting a big package from a Hollywood studio to start the day; there really isn't.)  The new name is Soda, but that's about all I can say without getting myself into contractual trouble. Ha ha! (I'm serious. These guys have good lawyers.)

7th: Yes, it's finally happened: Syrup has been optioned for a feature film! After a great deal of messing around (mostly by me), today I finally signed a contract. This means I now get to sit around and say things like, "Tobey Maguire can win a thousand Oscars, babe, but he'll never open a picture," while other people go about the dirty business of actually trying to get something made. It's fun already.

As things start to happen in the coming months, I'll report it here. And if nothing's happening, I'll make up some wild rumors to keep things interesting.

10th: I received some Soda & Cie's in the mail, which is the French version of Syrup. Ooh la la! You can check out the cover if you like.

I've also added an Other Books section, since the most common question I get asked is: "Are you writing another book?" (Right after that is: "What's taking you so long?") It's spectacularly devoid of information, but you can take a guess at which of six possible books I'm writing. (I don't tell you if you're right, you just guess. It's a little cruel.)

5th: This is what happens when your computer dies: you stop updating your web site. But I do have some new goodies: Syrup Extras! If you've read the book and want to take a look behind the scenes, check this out.

Everyone else, read the book first. You should be ashamed.

24th: It's about a month and a half before the Syrup paperback (with that controversial cover) hits the shelves in the US, and it's just gone back for a second printing! This is pretty exciting, since I've never been reprinted before.

The smaller, cuter, Aussie paperback comes out in a couple of weeks time, and I'll be doing a reading at Readings Books in Melbourne on 29th June.

7th: I got my hands on the German version of Syrup, which is called "Fukk." It's a fairly weird feeling to not be able to read my own book. It's also very strange to see Scat and 6 in L.A. saying, "Ja, ja." But it is an interesting way to learn German: I go to where the naughty words should be and look them up.

You know how when you stand a book up, the writing on the spine faces left? Well, German books face the opposite way. Either that, or Fukk is the result of a really big screw-up. (I just found that interesting.)

The Australian mass-market paperback is due out in a few months' time, and I love the new-look cover. I have so many different Syrup covers now that I'm going to make up a special page for them all. Until then, you can compare the US hardback and forthcoming (June) paperback here -- and boy, that paperback's really getting its butt kicked in the voting.

5th: The L.A. Times has just named Syrup one of "The Best Books of 1999"!

That's so cool -- thanks L.A. Times!

17th: I've got a sneak preview of the new Syrup cover, which will adorn the US paperback release next year. What do you think? Yes, I'm getting interactive: vote for your favorite cover now!

And one other thing: the German-language Syrup is coming out shortly, under the name Fukk. That gives me an alarming amount of adolescent enjoyment.

October

11th: I'm back in Melbourne after the Newcastle Young Writers Festival -- my first writers festival, and a great experience! Things have been very busy for the last couple of months, especially since I'm just a few weeks away from finishing my next novel. (No, it's not a sequel. No, I'm not going to tell you about it... yet.) Stay tuned!

13th: Zowie, this is pretty cool. Thanks to Penguin Australia, you can now send a Syrup e-postcard!

12th: Back to Australia after five months in the US! I had such a great time in the States, but boy, it's good to be home again. Syrup is already on the bookshelves here (and wow, it's everywhere I look), although most of my publicity stuff won't happen until September. (I argued hard for a Godzilla-style teaser campaign, starting to build about nine months before publication date, but you won't believe how obstinate these publishers can be.)

July

30th: Thanks to everyone who came to hear me read on my US tour! I think my favorite question was: "Did you really write this?" Indeed: did I, or is this exotic Australian exterior nothing but a slick marketing idea designed to attract publicity? You be the judge.

6th: It's publication day! Woo hoo!

June
1999
22nd: U.S. tour dates & places are now finalized: you can come giggle at my accent in New York, Chicago, L.A., San Francisco or Boston.

14th: Less than a month until Syrup hits the shelves, and new reviews (below)!
